Carnatic musician Balamuralikrishna passes away

Veteran Carnatic musician M. Balamuralikrishna passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 86.

A native of Sankaraguptam in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, he was named Murali Krishna. At the age of 8, he gave his first concert in Vijayawada. Distinguished Harikatha performer Musunuri Suryanarayana Murty Bhagavatar, who saw the concert, gave the prefix 'Bala', and hence he became Balamuralikrishna.

He is credited with innovating the tala system with Thri Mukhi, Panchamukhi, Saptha Mukhi and Nava Mukhi. Besides being a vocalist, Balamuralikrishna also played the viola, mridangam, and kanjira.



Balamuralikrishna acted as Narada in Telugu movie ''Bhakta Prahalada''. He has rendered some unforgettable playback songs too. He was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 1991.

ग्वाल्हेर घराण्याच्या आंतरराष्ट्रीय कीर्तीच्या गायिका गुरुवर्य विदुषी डॉ. वीणा सहस्रबुद्धे यांचे दि. २९ जून २०१६ रोजी दीर्घ आजाराने दुःखद निधन झाले.
त्यांना श्रद्धांजली वाहण्यासाठी त्यांचे कुटुंबीय, शिष्य परिवार आणि गांधर्व महाविद्यालयातर्फे , शुक्रवार, दि. ८ जुलै रोजी , सायंकाळी ६:०० वाजता , गांधर्व महाविद्यालयाच्या विष्णू-विनायक स्वरमंदिर (मेहुणपुरा शनिवार पेठ , पुणे ) येथे "स्मृती सभा " चे आयोजन केले आहे.
या स्मृती सभेमध्ये पं. शरद साठे, पं. संजीव अभ्यंकर , विदुषी अश्विनी भिडे-देशपांडे इत्यादी मान्यवरांचा प्रत्यक्ष सहभाग असून, इतरही अनेक मान्यवर कलाकारांच्या वीणाताईंबद्दलच्या आठवणी दृक्श्राव्य माध्यमातून ऐकायला आणि पाहायला मिळतील.
वीणाताईंच्या आणि भारतीय अभिजात शास्त्रीय संगीताच्या चाहत्यांनी या सभेस जरूर उपस्थित राहावे.

Pravin Godkhindi (Kannada: ಪ್ರವೀಣ್ ಗೋಡಖಿಂಡಿ) is a flute (Bansuri) player^[1] following the Hindustani style of music. Pravin was born on October 28, to Pt Venkatesh Godkhindi and Padmaja. He is a trained Electrical engineer and an alumnus of SDM College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad. He plays traditional Hindustani style of flute as well as contemporary. His father "Pt.Venkatesh Godkhindi" is a bansuri maestro,vocalist and A-grade radio artist, serving AIR at Goa, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mangalore and Dharwad. He started learning flute from his father at the age of three. Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi trained Pravin for decades together.Pravin has mastered his father's own unique style of singing on flute(gayki style).He is a master of thanthrakari style. He has experimented with fusion of both Indian and Western music. He is now learning the deeper aspects of Laya and Layakaari under Mridangam maestro Vidwan Anooru Ananth Krishna Sharma. He has given many solo concerts in India and abroad. He is playing a very significant role in popularizing the Indian Classical Music among the masses^{[citation needed]} . The "3 generations" concert which he performed with his father Pt Venkatesh Godkhindi and son Shadaj Godkhindi caught the attention of flute lovers all over the world. He has also performed at the World Flutes Festival at Mendoza, Argentina in September, 2010.He was awarded the title "Suramani" at the age of 16. He is the first southindian Bansuri artiste to be graded "A-Top". He is also the first Indian to perform on the 8 feet contrabass flute, which he renamed as GOD's BANSI. He has composed music for innumerable popular TV serials such as "Garva", "Malebillu","Preeti illade mele" and so on. He won the Aryabhata award for his composition of title track for Malebillu. He has composed music for films like Beru (A national award winning movie, 2005), Vimukthi and "krishna nee late aagi baaro". He has also composed music for several dance ballets and dramas. He is known for his fusion albums and a raga based TV show "Ragaranjini.". He has performed with veteran musicians like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Dr Balmurali Krishna, Pt. Kadri Gopalnath, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Vidwan Kumaresh and many others. His album by name "Raaga Rang" in association with saxophone maestro Shri Kadri

Most of the connoisseurs love to listen to Jazz music, but many of us really don't 'understand' what Jazz is! Boston based Jazz and Hindustani musician Warren Senders in going to explain the musical nuances of Jazz in a special program 'An introduction to Jazz music'. He will also describe the history and work of milestone Jazz musicians along with rendition of the music.
This program is organized in the 39th episode of ‘Sudarshan Sangeet Sabha’ on Sunday, 20th March 2016, 6 pm at Jyotsna Bhole auditorium, Hirabaug, near Swargate, Pune. Donation passes will be available 30 min before program.

Vasantotsav 2016 will be a 'Free Entry' event - as a gesture of expressing gratefulness towards society.
At the press conference a short while ago, the chief architect for the musical event, Rahul Deshpande mentioned "Since inception, Vasantotsav has received tremendous love and support from the connoisseurs of music in the city. To express our gratitude towards the society of music lovers who have made Vasantotsav one of the most sought after music events in the state, this year we have decided to organize Vasantotsav without any cost for the tickets. It is our way of acknowledging our patrons' support and what could be a better occasion - for the 100th stage show of the most acclaimed musical play ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’ to make this gesture and the ‘Vasantotsav’ a special and memorable one".
The event this year will be held at the Ramanbaug Prashala from 15 January to 17 January.
Patrons are requested to note the information for the free passes. The passes are mainly for two categories, chair seating and Indian seating.We urge every patron to note that every person will be given two passes on a first come first serve basis. Kindly note that entry to the musical event will only be possible with an authorized pass.
The free pass(es) will be made available from tomorrow, 5th January. They will be available between 10 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm, at the Balgandharva Rangmandir and Pandit Farms located in Karve Nagar.
