Jazz Utsav

Five international artistes and well-known home-grown musical geniuses like Gary Lawyer and Louis Banks, will offer much jazz for thought at the forthcoming Ishanya Pune Jazz Utsav.

Scheduled to be held at Ishanya mall's amphitheatre on November 20, 21 and 22, the three-day jazz extravaganza will be a big leap for Pune as it marks the city as one of the three destinations that will host the much-famed Jazz Utsav in the country.

Names like Wanny Angerer from Honduras, the Nils Olav Johansen Quartet from Norway, the Thaerichens Tentet from Germany, the Rafal Gorzycki EP Trio from Poland and famous Dutch trumpeter Saskia Laroo, along with home-bred Gary Lawyer and Louis Banks, will present a gamut of jazz for Puneites to feast on. The event has been organised in collaboration with the Pune Jazz Club (PJC).

सवाई गंधर्व महोत्सव सात ते दहा जानेवारीला

आर्य संगीत प्रसारक मंडळातर्फे पुढील वर्षी सात ते दहा जानेवारी या कालावधीत सवाई गंधर्व संगीत महोत्सव आयोजित करण्यात आला आहे. दर वर्षी डिसेंबर महिन्यात होणारा हा महोत्सव "स्वाइन फ्लू'च्या साथीमुळे पुढे ढकलण्याचा निर्णय यापूर्वी घेण्यात आला होता.

गेल्या काही महिन्यांत शहरात सुरू असलेल्या स्वाइन फ्लूच्या साथीमुळे सार्वजनिक व्यवहारांवर बंधने आली होती. ज्या काळात महोत्सवाच्या आयोजनाची तयारी सुरू होत असते नेमक्‍या त्याच कालखंडात या साथीचा संसर्ग वाढला होता. त्यामुळे मंडळाच्या विश्‍वस्तांनी महापालिका आयुक्त महेश झगडे आणि पोलिस आयुक्त डॉ. सत्यपालसिंह यांच्याशी चर्चा केली. डिसेंबरमध्ये थंडीचे प्रमाण वाढते आणि त्याच काळात स्वाइन फ्लूच्या विषाणूंचा संसर्ग होण्याची शक्‍यता असल्याचा अंदाज वैद्यकीय क्षेत्रातील तज्ज्ञांना व्यक्त केला होता. त्यामुळे दर वर्षी डिसेंबरमध्ये दुसऱ्या आठवड्यात गुरुवार ते रविवार असे चार दिवस पाच सत्रांत होणारा महोत्सव स्थगित करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला होता.

आंतरराष्ट्रीय कीर्ती प्राप्त केलेल्या या महोत्सवासाठी देशभरातून; त्याचप्रमाणे परदेशांतूनही रसिक मोठ्या संख्येने उपस्थित राहतात. त्यामुळे दर वर्षी डिसेंबर महिन्याच्या दुसऱ्या आठवड्यात होणारा हा महोत्सव शक्‍य तेवढ्या लवकर नेहमीच्या पद्धतीने साजरा करण्याच्या दृष्टीने पावले उचलली. आता जानेवारीमध्ये दुसऱ्या आठवड्यातील गुरुवार ते रविवार या कालावधीत तो घेण्याचे निश्‍चित केले आहे, असे मंडळाचे कार्याध्यक्ष श्रीनिवास जोशी आणि कार्यकारी सचिव पं. श्रीकांत देशपांडे यांनी सोमवारी प्रसिद्धिपत्रकाद्वारे कळविले आहे.

Sawai Gandharva postponed

[From Express India]

The Sawai Gandharva Music Festival, that was to be held in the city in December, has been postponed in the wake of scare of revival of swine flu epidemic in the city. In the 57 years’ history of the much acclaimed festival, this is the fifth time that it has to be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, though it has never been cancelled.

The festival is generally held in the first weekend of December, but its preparation starts almost six months earlier, as around 35 artistes from across the country come to the city showcase their art.

“The swine flu epidemic was at its peak when the preparations were on for the festival. The organisers had a discussion with district collector Chandrakant Dalvi and PMC commissioner Mahesh Zagade about the situation in the city and the possibility of revival of the epidemic. Finally, the organisers decided not to take the risk as many people gather during the festival,” said the press note issued by Shrinivas Joshi and Shreekant Deshpande of Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal that organises the festival.

The press note also said the organisers would convey the new schedule of the festival through the media.

Nephew and child prodigy of flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Rakesh Chaurasia is the most accomplished of disciples of his uncle, who shows all the promise to carry the Chaurasia legacy to new heights.

One of the foremost exponents of Gwalior Gharana, Malini Rajurkar is one of the most well known vocalists of her generation. She was born in 1941 to music loving parents and brought up in a middle class household in Rajasthan. Even though music classes at school revealed her talent, Malini was not expected to go beyond fulfilling family duties and taking up a safe, respectable job. In fact, for three years she taught mathematics at the Savitri Girls’ High School & College, Ajmer, where she had graduated in the same subject.

But Malini was destined for bigger things. Taking advantage of a three-year scholarship that came her way, she finished her Sangeet Nipun from the Ajmer Music College, studying music under the guidance of Govindrao Rajurkar and his nephew, who was to become her future husband, Vasantrao Rajurkar.

Settled in Hyderabad for over 40 years since the 1970s, her training in her gurus’ style has rooted Malini in the Gwalior approach. However, she has felt free to adopt aspects of other styles to create her own. She has been influenced by the likes of K.G.Ginde and Jitendra Abhisheki and by her fondness for the idiosyncratic vocalism of Kumar Gandharva. Malini Rajurkar sings khayal in the Kirana style and is an acknowledged master of Tappa and Tarana.

Considered by many as the finest female vocalist of her generation, Kishori Amonkar has been blessed with a naturally melodious voice. The distinguishing feature of her performance is the effortlessness with which she presents ragas. Her renderings keep intact the tradition of the Jaipur Gharana without being tradition bound,thus winning the acclaim of purists as well as laymen.

Born in 1931, Kishori Amonkar is the daughter of Smt. Mogubai who herself was a renowned vocalist of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana. Kishori Amonkar Trained under her mother, thus imbibing the distinct traditions of her ‘Gharana’. She ventured into light-classical music as well, without making any compromises on the principles of her ‘Gharana’. She has sung for films too and composed music for the film ‘Drishti’. Among the numerous awards bestowed upon her are the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, the Padma Bhushan and the prestigious Sangeet Samradhini Award.

मन्ना डे यांना दादासाहेब फाळके पुरस्कार जाहीर

About the artists:

A vocalist of great promise, Smt. Jayashree Patanekar combines a variety of elements from the Gwalior, Jaipur and Agra traditions and presents them in a unique and aesthetically pleasing manner.

She began her training at the age of eight or nine with Vithal Pai of Sawantwadi and then continued it with Mr. K.D.Jaokar for about 5 years. Later she received training with Ratnakar Pai and Nivrutibua Sarnaik. In 1964, she received the first prize in vocal music in a nation wide competition held by All India Radio.

Pt. Gajananbua Joshi the violin maestro and eminent vocalist of the Gwalior Ghrana listened to her singing and agreed to teach her. Without asking her to chnage her voice culture, he trained her for seven or eight years concentrating on every aspect of singing-use of voice-culture, increasing the power of breath, clarity in Taans, puroity of notes control of rhythm, exposition of the Raag structure in a planned and beautiful manner and so on. Through him, she picked up the nuances of styles of Bhurji Khan, Vilayat Hussein Khan, Vazebua etc.

Suresh "Bhai" Gaitonde began learning tabla with his father, a doctor by profession and a keen amateur musician. During his teenage years, he learned tabla from Balubhai Rukadikar, himself a student of the Delhi and Farukhabad tabla traditions. Around the age of twenty, Bhai Gaitonde met Pandit Jagannathbuwa Purohit. Purohit was primarily a vocalist of the Agra gharana, and as “Gunidas” is known to us as a major, prolific composer of vocal compositions in the khayal genre. However, he was also a renowned tabla player, and he imparted to Bhai a rigorous training that concentrated meticulously on sound production, clarity, and the fingering and technique appropriate to the traditional compositions of the various stylistic schools. Described by Bhai Gaitonde as a “wonderful relationship”, this association with Purohit continued for sixteen years until the latter’s sudden death in 1968. Bhai Gaitonde is often associated in the popular mind as being a prominent disciple of the unparalleled Ahmedjan Thirakwa. Although this is borne out by some uncanny musical resemblances, it may surprise many to learn that Bhai spent just three years with Thirakwa. Nevertheless, he did learn from Vinayakrao Ghangrekar for ten years, and Ghangrekar was a student of Subraiji Ankolekar who, like Thirakwa, was a student of Munir Khan “Laliyana”. In this clip (taken from the India Archive recording for which I wrote liner notes) Bhai Gaitonde plays several Purabi gats of Farukhabad and Lucknow, some made famous by Thirakwa.

About the artists:

Shakir Khan belongs to the 8th generation of the famous Etawah Gharana. He is the eldest son and disciple of Sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. Shakir gave his first public recital at the age of 11. He has performed in prestigious music conferences in India including the Dover Lane Music Conference (Kolkata), Saptak Music Festival (Ahmedabad), Bombay Festival (Mumbai) and many more. He has also performed in the U.S and Europe. Shakir has had the honor of accompanying his father on stage and has been appreciated as a prodigious talent by great masters such as Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Shakir Khan is a promising and talented young artist with an exquisite sense of sur and laya reflected through his performance. He has distinguished himself by winning a Government of India merit scholarship and first prize at the All India Radio (AIR) Music Competition. Shakir’s academic accomplishments include a Masters in Music from Bhartiya Vidya Peeth.

Pt. Suresh Talwalkar belongs to a famous family of Keertankars. His father, Dattatrey Talwalkar initiated him into tabla at a very young age. He received training from Pandharinath Nageshkar and Vinayakrao Gangreker. His diverse training in Carnatic Laya-Shastra from Ramnad Ishwaran has enabled him to imbibe the intricacies of both North and South Indian Tala Systems and create a unique style to tabla playing of his own. He has given a new dimension to each of his concerts where he provides accompaniment to leading vocalists and instrumentalists. He has accompanied leading Kathak dancers and has also presented lecture-demonstrations at several renowned institutions. As a soloist, he has taken tabla lahara to new heights encompassing various aspects of Hindustani raga sangeet.

Broad cultural vision, rigorous analysis, clarity and thought provoking presentations are his strengths. He seeks to explore everything that is touched by music.

ज्येष्ठ हार्मोनिअम वादक अप्पा जळगावकर यांचे निधन

ज्येष्ठ हार्मोनिअम वादक अप्पा जळगावकर यांचे आज सकाळी ६ वाजता वृद्धापकाळाने निधन झाले. ते ८७ वर्षांचे होते.

जालन्यात जन्मलेल्या अप्पा जळगावकर सुरूवातीला ध्रुपद गायकी करायचे. ४० वर्षांपूर्वी ते पुण्यात आले आणि पुण्याचेच होवून गेले. ध्रुपद गायकीच्या मैफीलमध्ये सुरूवातीला त्यांचे मन रमायचे. नंतर त्यांनी हार्मोनियम वादनाला सुरूवात केली. हार्मोनियम वादनासाठी त्यांनी कोणत्याही गुरूकडून ज्ञान घेतले नाही. परंतु, हार्मोनियम वादनात त्यांनी स्वतःचे असे स्थान निर्माण केले.
पुण्यात आल्यावर त्यांची ओळख स्वरभास्कर पंडित भीमसेन जोशी यांच्याशी झाली. त्यानंतर पंडितजींच्या बहुतांशी मैफलीत ते आपल्या बहारदार हार्मोनियम वादनाने रंग भरू लागले. त्यांनी किशोरी अमोणकर, कुमार गंधर्व, मालिनी राजूरकर, माणिक वर्मा यांनाही साथ दिली आहे. लहेरा आणि तालाचे त्यांना उत्तम ज्ञान होते. संगीत शास्त्राचे त्यांना उत्तम ज्ञान होते.

त्याचे वादन अत्यंत संयमी होते. कोणत्याही कलाकारच्या गायनाप्रमाणे त्याचे हार्मोनियम वादन होते. आपली जोड त्यात ते कधीही देत नव्हते. परंतु, इतर वेळी ते आपल्या हार्मोनियम वादनाने मजा आणत असतं. ते कलाकार म्हणून जेवढे मोठे होते. तेवढे माणूस म्हणून मोठे होते. प्रेम, शांत असल्याने ते ख-याअर्थाने जग्नमित्र होते, असे स्वरांनंद प्रतिष्ठानचे कार्यकारी विश्वस्त प्रकाश भोंडे यांनी अप्पांच्या आठवणींना उजाळा दिला.

चार वर्षांपूर्वी त्यांना अर्धांगवायूचा झटका आला होता. त्यामुळे त्यांची प्रकृती बिघडली होती. त्यामुळे ते अंथरूणाला खिळून होते. त्यात किडनीचा त्रास सुरू होता. आज सकाळी सहा वाजता त्यांच वृध्दपकाळाने निधन झाले. त्यांच्या पत्नी शालिनीताई जळगावकर यांचे काही वर्षांपूर्वी निधन झाले होते. त्यांच्या तालमीत अनेक हार्मोनियम वादक तयार झाले. मोठ्या शिष्य गणात मुकुंद फडकरी, राहुल देशपांडे ही काही नावाजलेली नावे आहेत.

सकाळी साडे अकराच्या सुमारास वैकुंठ स्मशान भूमीत त्यांच्या पार्थिवावर अंत्यसंस्कार करण्यात येणार आहेत.

Pune festival rescheduled in December

Chairman of the Pune Festival Organizing Committee & Member of Parliament Mr. Suresh Kalmadi has announced that the Pune Festival scheduled to be held from August 23, 2009 onwards now will be rescheduled for mid-December 2009.

This step by Mr. Kalmadi is in line with the preparations of Pune City to battle the spread of the H1N1 virus (or swine flu).

Mr. Kalmadi said the final dates will be announced later.

Pune festival begins on August 28

The 21st edition of the Pune Festival will be dedicated to late veteran Marathi actor Nilu Phule. To be held from August 28 to September 3, the festival will be inaugurated by playback singer Asha Bhosale on August 28 at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch at 4.30 pm.

“Union minister Farooq Abdullah will grace the occasion as chief guest on August 28. The annual Pune Festival awards will be presented the same evening to veteran flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, singer Mubarak Begum, scientist Jayant Narlikar and industrialist Kiran Mazumdar Shaw,” said MP Suresh Kalmadi, also the chairman of the Pune Festival Committee, at a press conference on Saturday.

The Shiamak Experience,’ a dance performance by choreographer Shiamak Davar and his troupe, a presentation by actress-danseuse, Hema Malini and her daughters, Esha and Ahana, and programmes by actors Varsha Usgaonkar and Subodh Bhave, are some of the main attractions of this year’s Pune Festival. Recitals by Chaurasia himself and vocalist, Pandita Kishori Amonkar are also the highlights.

In addition, other events like Marathi dramas, kavi sammelan,’ lavani,’ Kerala Mahotsav, Mahila Mahotsav, painting exhibition, vintage car rally, musical programmes for upcoming artistes like Ugavate Taare’ and Indradhanu,’ and sports events like the roller-skating competition, roll ball competition, clycling race, a golf tournamanent and a body-building competition are in the offing.

The events will be held at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch, Bal Gandharva Rangmandir and Kala Dalan, Tilak Smarak Mandir, Yashwantrao Chavan auditorium, Kothrud, Nehru Memorial Hall, Lokmanya auditorium at Kesriwada and GL Apte auditorium.

The festival’s inaugural ceremony will be broadcast live on Doordarshan’s Sahyadri channel. The installation of the Ganesh idol will be held on August 23 at Hotel Saras, Nehru Stadium at 10.30 am.

Artistic offerings are aplenty what with Tukaram Daithankar opening the festival on August 28 with a shehnai’ recital, followed by Ganesh Vandana’ by Hema Malini and Esha and Ahana Deol’s dance performances. Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare and his troupe of 100 artistes will present Shivkalyan Raja.’

The journey of lavani’ in the last 50 years of Marathi cinema will be highlighted in Lavani Bavankhani,’ a programme by actors like Usgaonkar, Amruta Khanvilkar, Deepali Sayyed, Shruti Marathe, Aniket Vishwasrao and Mayuresh Pen. Not to forget a recital by vocalist Shrinivas Joshi, a powada’ programme by Subodh Bhave along with Shahir Hemant Mavale.

Given the golden jubilee year of Maharashtra state, a special sequence of Marathi dramas like Olakh Na Palakh,’ Kuriyat Sada Tingalam’ and Jaago Mohan Pyare,’ to name a few, will be presented at the festival. The state-level Marathi Kavi Sammelan will consist of Ramdas Phutane, FM Shinde, Vitthal Wagh and Prakash Pathare, among others, will Hasyotsav’ will have participation by Makarand Tillu, Banda Joshi, Dilip Hallyal and Sadanand Chandekar.

A Pune Festival queen competition will be organised in two age groups at Balgandharva auditorium. The vintage car rally will be flagged off from Hotel Le Meridien on August 30 at 10 am. Corporates and ambassadors of various countries residing in India will participate in the golf tournament to be held at Oxford Golf and Country Club, Bavdhan.

About the artist:

A great vocalist, Smt. Jayashree Patanekar combines a variety of elements from the Gwalior, Jaipur and Agra traditions and presents them in a unique and aesthetically pleasing manner.

She began her training at the age of eight or nine with Vithal Pai of Sawantwadi and then continued it with Mr. K.D.Jaokar for about 5 years. Later she received training with Ratnakar Pai and Nivrutibua Sarnaik. In 1964, she received the first prize in vocal music in a nation wide competition held by All India Radio.

Pt. Gajananbua Joshi, the violin maestro and eminent vocalist of the Gwalior Ghrana listened to her singing and agreed to teach her. Without asking her to chnage her voice culture, he trained her for seven or eight years concentrating on every aspect of singing-use of voice-culture, increasing the power of breath, clarity in Taans, puroity of notes control of rhythm, exposition of the Raag structure in a planned and beautiful manner and so on. Through him, she picked up the nuances of styles of Bhurji Khan, Vilayat Hussein Khan, Vazebua etc.

भास्कर चंदावरकर यांना संगीत क्षेत्रातील मान्यवरांची श्रद्धांजली

मैफलीतील संगीत आणि चित्रपटातील संगीत यातील फरक नेमका स्पष्ट करणारा, चित्रपट या माध्यमाची अतिशय सखोल जाण असणारा, तत्त्व आणि प्रात्यक्षिक यांच्यात कलात्मक समतोल साधणारा कलासाधक गमावल्याची भावना पं. भास्कर चंदावरकर यांच्या श्रद्धांजली सभेत त्यांच्या सहकाऱ्यांनी मंगळवारी व्यक्त केली.
पं. चंदावरकर यांनी फिल्म अँड टेलिव्हिजन इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ इंडिया या संस्थेत १९६८ ते १९८० या काळात संगीत विभाग प्रमुख, प्राध्यापक आणि संगीतकार या नात्याने काम केले होते. चंदावरकर यांच्या आठवणी जागविणाऱ्या या श्रद्धांजली सभेत त्यांच्यासोबत वावरलेले त्यांचे मित्र गहिवरले होते.
ज्येष्ठ चित्रपटतज्ज्ञ पी. के. नायर म्हणाले, ""चंदावरकर यांच्यातील कलागुणांचा दर्जा दिग्दर्शक ऋत्विक घटक यांच्या लक्षात येताच त्यांनी चंदावरकरांना संस्थेत येण्यास सुचवले, पण "नोकरी' स्वीकारण्याची त्यांची तयारी नव्हती. कालांतराने ते संस्थेत रुजू झाले. १९६८ मध्ये संस्थेच्या पहिल्या पदवीप्रदान समारंभाची "सिग्नेचर ट्यून' करण्याचे काम राहिले होते. तेव्हा पंडित रविशंकर संस्थेत आले होते. रवीजी आणि भास्करजी यांनी रात्रभर जागून ही ट्यून तयार केली होती. ती नंतर एका चित्रपटातही वापरली गेली होती. मूकपटांच्या काळात वाजविले जाणारे लाइव्ह संगीत हा चंदावरकरांच्या संशोधनाचा एक भाग होता. "कालियामर्दन' या मूकपटासाठी वाजवलेले संगीत त्यांनी नंतर स्वतः तयार केले होते. सध्या संस्थेच्या चित्रपटगृहाची ग्रीनरूम असणारी खोली त्या काळी "म्युझिक रूम' होती आणि ते रात्र रात्र जागून तिथे संगीतरचनांचे काम करत असत. चंदावरकर, मी आणि सुरेश छाब्रिया चित्रपट या माध्यमाविषयी तिथे सतत चर्चा, वादविवाद करत असू,'' अशा आठवणी त्यांनी सांगितल्या.
सुरेश छाब्रिया म्हणाले, ""आधुनिकतावाद, आधुनिक संगीत, चित्रकला, तत्त्वज्ञान यांच्या समकालीन प्रवाहांची अत्यंत प्रगल्भ जाण हे चंदावरकर यांचे वैशिष्ट्य होते. संगीत हा त्यांचा ध्यास होता. पण अन्य कलांविषयी ते सतत सजग असत. "एफटीआयआय'मुळे आमचा दीर्घकाळ संबंध आला. चित्रपटातील संगीत आणि मैफलीतील संगीताविष्कार यांतील फरक त्यांनी नेमका पकडला होता. कुठल्या माध्यमासाठी कोणत्या प्रकारचे आणि किती संगीत असावे, याचा त्यांचा अभ्यास विलक्षण होता.''
सतीश आळेकर म्हणाले, ""आमचे संबंध "एफटीआयआय'च्या स्थापनेपासूनचे होते. संस्थेच्या "चित्रपट रसग्रहण वर्गा'चा मी विद्यार्थीही होतो. साहित्य, संगीत, चित्रपट याविषयीच्या त्यांच्या चर्चा, वाद त्यांचे परस्परसंबंध याविषयी ते सतत सांगत असत. त्या काळात इंटरनेट नव्हते, पण चंदावरकर म्हणजे आमचा "विश्‍वकोश'च होता. समकालीन संवेदना घडविण्यात त्यांचे योगदान महत्त्वाचे आहे. "घाशीराम कोतवाल' नाटकाच्या मूळ संहितेत इतकी गाणी नव्हती. चंदावरकरांनी ती स्वतः तयार केली आणि संगीतापलीकडचेही योगदान दिले.''
श्‍यामला वनारसे म्हणाल्या, ""ज्या पद्धतीने चंदावरकर काम करत असत, ती पद्धतच विद्यार्थ्यांना खूप शिकवणारी असायची. सूर, लय, ताल, चित्र, रंग यांच्यातील सूक्ष्म पण तरल नाती ते विद्यार्थ्यांसमोर उलगडत असत.'' रवी कुलकर्णी, श्रीमती छाब्रिया, लक्ष्मी बिराजदार, जयश्री बोकील यांनीही आदरांजली अर्पण केली.

Music lovers will soon get rare records, facility to listen them

Pune Music lovers in the city will soon be able to enjoy music of different genre, including classical, folk, jazz, rock and even film songs under one roof, at an art gallery-cum-music archive, which will house rare musical records by renowned artistes as well as a facility to enjoy the music in tranquility.

This facility will be set up at an upcoming art gallery, which will be named after Bharatratna recipient and the doyen of Kirana gharana Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, on the premises of the Vasantrao Bagul garden in Sahakarnagar.

Congress leader in the PMC Ulhas Bagul told reporters on Tuesday that the construction work for the art gallery is on in full swing and would cost Rs three crore.

The art and music gallery spread over 16,000 sq ft, will have four floors. On the ground floor, there will be 35 cubicles, where people can listen to music by their favourite artistes with the help of digitised archives of rare as well as popular ones. The archive will focus on artistes from Pune. However, records of artistes from other parts of the country will also be part of the collection.

In addition to this, the ground floor will have an auditorium, where screening of short films or other programmes could be arranged.

“The construction work is actually over, only the interior work is still going on. We have tried to give the building a novel look. It has a state-of-the-art sound system. Large models of different musical instruments are part of the exterior designing which creates a musical theme,” Bagul said.

An art gallery of 3,500 sq ft is designed on the first floor, where painting exhibitions could be held. On the second floor, a memorial has been designed for the late Marathi actor Suryakant Mandhare , where his awards and trophies will be on display, besides his picture gallery.

ज्येष्ठ गायिका गंगूबाई हनगल यांचे निधन

हुबळी - हिंदुस्थानी शास्त्रीय संगीतातील ज्येष्ठ गायिका गंगूबाई हनगल यांचे मंगळवारी प्रदीर्घ आजाराने निधन झाले. त्या ९७ वर्षांच्या होत्या. कर्नाटकातील हुबळीमधील खासगी रूग्णालयात त्यांच्यावर उपचार सुरू होते. तेथेच मंगळवारी सकाळी ७.१० वाजता त्यांची प्राणज्योत मालवली.

गंगूबाईंच्या मागे दोन मुले आणि एक मुलगी असा परिवार आहे. श्वसनाचा त्रास होत असल्याने गेल्या तीन जूनपासून त्यांना रुग्णालयात दाखल करण्यात आले होते. सोमवारी रात्रीपासून त्यांची स्थिती चिंताजनक बनली होती.

गंगूबाई हनगल यांचा जन्म पाच मार्च १९१३ मध्ये धारवाड येथे झाला. शालेय शिक्षण परिस्थितीवशात फारसे झाले नाही. मात्र, हिंदुस्तानी संगीताची ओढ असल्याने किराणा घराण्याचे गायक व गुरू सवाई गंधर्व उर्फ रामभाऊ कुंदगोळकर यांचे शिष्यत्व स्वीकारून त्यांनी स्वरनिष्ठ गायकीची आयुष्यभर जोपासना केली. १९२४ मध्ये बेळगावच्या कॉंग्रेस अधिवेशनात महात्मा गांधी यांच्याकडून गंगूबाईंना गाण्यासाठी शाबासकी मिळाली होती. हुबळीत किराणा घराण्याचे उस्ताद अब्दुल करीम खॉं यांनीही गंगूबाई या बालगायिकेचे गाणे ऐकून कौतुक केले होते.
कथक नृत्याचे धडे गंगूबाईंनी धारवाडला प्रतापलाल आमि श्‍यामलाल यांच्याकडे गिरवले. कृष्णाचार्य हुलगूर यांच्याकडून त्यांना किराणा घराण्याच्या सत्तर द्रुत चिजा मिळाल्या होत्या. १९३२ च्या सुमारास मुंबईतील मैफलीत ज्येष्ठ गायिका मेनका शिरोडकर, जद्दनबाई (अभिनेत्री नर्गिसच्या आई), पार्श्‍वगायक के. एल. सैगल यांच्यासारख्या दिग्गजांनी गंगूबाईंचे गाणे ऐकून आनंद व्यक्त केला होता. याच साली एचएमव्हीने त्यांच्या गांधारी हनगल या नावाने बारा गाण्यांची ध्वनिमुद्रिका काढली. बाबूराव पेंढारकर यांच्या "विजयाची लग्ने' या चित्रपटातही त्या गायिल्या होत्या. १९३६ पासून त्यांचे सवाई गंधर्व यांच्याकडे रीतसर शिक्षण सुरू झाले आणि त्यानंतर ख्यालगायिका हीच त्यांची ओळख बनली. दरम्यान गुरुराव कौलगी यांच्यासह त्यांचे सांसारीक जीवनही सुरू होते. गृहिणीपद, मातृत्वाच्या जबाबदाऱ्या सांभाळून त्या रियाज करीत असत.टॉन्सिल्सच्या त्रासावर उपचार घेत असताना १९५० मध्ये त्यांचा मूळचा बारीक आवाज बदलला आणि भरदार, दमदार बनला. हा बदल त्यांनी धीरोदात्तपणे स्वीकारला आणि संगीतसाधना सुरू ठेवली. अल्पावधीतच मान्यवर गायिका म्हणून त्या सर्वज्ञात झाल्या. विविध क्षेत्रातील महान व्यक्तींनी त्यांच्याविषयी गौरवोद्गार काढले आहेत. महाकवी द. रा. बेंद्रे यांनी त्यांना "गायनगंगादेवी' ही पदवी दिली. ज्ञानपीठप्राप्त लेखक एस. एल. भैरप्पाही त्यांचे चाहते होते. त्यांचा पहिला विदेश दौरा १९७९ मध्ये झाला.

द सॉंग ऑफ माय लाइफ हे गंगुबाईंचे आत्मकथन. मूळ कन्नडमधील या पुस्तकाचा इंग्रजी अनुवाद जी. एन. हनगल यांनी केला आहे.
बंधू शेषगिरी हनगल, कन्या कृष्णा हनगल यांच्या साथीने त्यांनी देशविदेशात अनेक मैफली गाजविल्या.

Suresh Wadkar being awarded with Vasundhara Pandit award

Pune Bharat Gayan Samaj will present Vasundhara Pandit award to the maestro vocalist Suresh Wadkar. Every year this award is presented to the artists proficient in music and comprises of rd 25,000. Renowned music directors Sheedhar Phadake and Ashok Patki will be present for the function. Award ceremony will be followed by a conversation between Suresh Wadkar and Shaila Datar about his musical journey.

About the artist:

Blessed by being born in a home where music was a breath, Shrinivas Joshi took to music naturally. Son of Hindustani classical music maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, shrinivas drew inspiration from his parents.

After completing B.Tech from IIT, Delhi, his decision to make music a career was a conscious one. shrinivas started serious pursuit of music in a traditional Gurukul System under his father and mother late Smt. Vatsalabai Joshi.

Along with extensive training and proper talim in Kirana Gharana, he also started accompanying his father in concerts. Occasionally, both father and son performed together. By such a legendary performer by his side, the subconscious absorption of the finer aspects was even better.

About the artist:
Arati Ankalikar has a mellifluous and resonant voice. Her compelling stage presence has made her a successful and sought after concert vocalist. She is currently recognized as one of the top vocalists of the younger generation.

She started her training with veteran Late Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni of the Agra Gwalior gharanas. Thereafter she was fortunate in receiving training from none other than Gana Saraswati Smt Kishori Amonkar of the Jaipur Atrauli gharana. For a brief period she also benefited from the guidance of Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar. She is continuing her training under Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. All of her teachers have influenced Arati's style. Listening to her performances one sees a very pleasant blend of the various gharanas represented by her teachers. Endowed with a rich resonant voice, Arati's performances are marked by an excellent command over both the rhythm and the melody.

The ShadjaMadhyam Team, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune and Gaan Maitra are pleased to usher in the monsoons in Pune with "Malhar Darshan" a vocal recital and dialogue with Dr. Vikas Kashalkar, one of the eminent musicologists, and vocalist of the Gwalior Gharana.



He will be accompanied on the harmonium by Shri Pramod Marathe and on the Tabla by Shri Parag Hirve. The programme has been organised by Gaan Maitra, Pune.

डॉ. अरविंद थत्ते : स्वरमयी गुरुकुलात रंगलेली मैफल
विख्यात हार्मोनिअमवादक व गुरु डॉ. अरविंद थत्ते यांची रवि. दि. २१ जून ०९ रोजी डॉ. प्रभा अत्रे यांच्या ’स्वरमयी गुरुकुलात’ स्वतंत्र हार्मोनिअमवादनाची मैफल झाली. त्यांनी प्रथम गौरी हा सायंकालीन राग सादर केला. या रागात शुद्ध रागरुपाची अनुभूती देणारे आलाप व तिश्र, मिश्रजातीच्या लयकारीने नटलेली विलंबित रुपक तालात गत डॉ. थत्ते यांनी वाजवली. नंतर त्यांनी अतीशय विस्तारपूर्वक व अनेक सांगीतिक सौंदर्यस्थळांचा वेध घेत पं. कुमारगंधर्व यांनी निर्माण केलेला धुनउगम राग मालवती पेश केला. मैफलीचा समारोप करताना डॉ. अरविंद थत्ते यांनी वाजवलेल्या राग मारुबिहाग या रागातील पंचरुपक या अनवट तालातील एक टप्पा व अतीद्रुत लयीतील गतीत झालावादन विशेष आकर्षक ठरले. डॉ. प्रभा अत्रे यांची सुप्रसिद्ध बंदिशही त्यांनी वाजवून दाद घेतली. त्यांना अतिशय पोषक अशी तबला संगत चारुदत्त फडके यांनी केली. स्वत: डॉ. प्रभा अत्रे यांसह पुण्यातील अनेक कलाकार व विद्यार्थ्यांनी डॉ. अरविंद थत्ते यांच्या या विलक्षण तयारीच्या, प्रभावी वादनाला उपस्थित राहून दाद दिली.

Sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan passes away

Sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan passed away in San Francisco in the US after a prolonged kidney ailment, according to a family friend in Kolkata. 88-year-old Khan died at his music centre at 10 am IST, Rabin Pal, the secretary of sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar,said.

The Sarod maestro is survived by wife Mary, three sons and daughter. Pal, a family friend of the sarod maestro, said that he was informed about the death of Khan by the Ustad's family in San Francisco. Khan's secretary in Kolkata Ashish Roy said the maestro, who was on dialysis, had been ailing for over four years and his condition had deteriorated in the last four months.

A recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Khan was a colossus in the world of Indian classical music for the last five decades. One of the most accomplished of Indian musicians in the Classical tradition, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has been designated a 'Living National Treasure' in India - not to mention the fact that he is the object of much admiration in the rest of the world for his absolute mastery of the 25-stringed sarod.

A recipient of a Central Government scholarship (1975-80) and the Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar scholarship (1980-82), Arati stood first in the All India Radio competition held during 1983 and 1984 in Indian classical music, thumri and gazal and was awarded gold medal in all the three categories. Arati has performed at many prestigious conferences in India, such as the Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav (Pune), the Malhar Utsav (Delhi), Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor Pranam (Bhopal), the Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan (Mumbai), the Dover Lane Festival (Calcutta), the Shankarlal Festival (Delhi) and at sabhas organized by the Madras Music Academy (Chennai). She has been on concert tours in USA, Canada, UK and UAE. Arati has to her credit a number of audio cassettes and CD recordings marketed by HMV, Polygram and Rhythm House. She was the main playback singer for the Sham Benegal film, "Sardari Begum".
