Sawai Gandharva Music Festival 2015 now accessible online

Pune: Music enthusiasts will now be able to watch the proceedings of the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav online in an initiative from the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, the organisers.

A high-definition (HD) video recording of this year's performances, running for over 15 hours, will be available from early February on the internet site www.musiqi.com for music lovers all over the world on a 'pay per use' basis. 

The mandal has roped in media production house Indian Magic Eye for the production and overall execution of this initiative along with US-based company Music on Fire. 

Rajesh Deshmukh, director of Indian Magic Eye, told reporters on Sunday that the web capsule of about 15 hours of the performances at the 62nd Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav will be available in the HD format for a $50 charge. An edited version of the festival will be available for $29.99, he added. 

Singer Sonu Nigam is the presenter of the web-based streaming, with commentary and information in English. 

The viewers will also have the choice of selecting a specific day's performances or the performance of a particular artiste, for $10 upward, Deshmukh said. There will be flexibiity of viewing the recordings according to one's convenience within a time limit, he added. 

Registrations will begin from January 15, Deshmukh said. Indian viewers who have access to high bandwidth for Internet access too can avail this facility, he added. 

Executive trustee Shriniwas Joshi said the mandal was making efforts to reach youths through internet. 

Rare Indian music archive launched online

Music lovers can now access the voices of a bygone era in digital format through an online archive of old and rare gramophone recordings.

The website, www.archiveofindianmusic.org, the brainchild of author-singer Vikram Sampath, was formally launched at a function in New Delhi Tuesday evening. It went online on pilot basis in January this year.

Mr. Sampath collected these gramophone recordings from flea markets and scrap dealers, digitised them, and made them available on the website.

“It is a moment of celebration for music lovers who now have access to legendary voices. It should become movement and more youngsters should participate,” External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, who launched the website, said.

Aimed at saving vintage recordings for future generations, the archive is an online museum of sorts with gramophone recordings spanning from 1902 to 1952 of legendry singers like Bhimsen Joshi, Devika Rani, Abdul Karim Khan, Hirabai Barodekar and Madurai Mani Iyer.

“It is an attempt to democratise the cultural heritage,” said Mr. Sampath.

Also present at the launch function was Padma Vibhshan recipient classical dancer Sonal Mansingh, who said the country needed more such initiatives. “Our cultural heritage is slipping away from our hands. I hope our younger generation addresses this problem and protects the tangible heritage,” she said.

“Someone who is passionate about dancing should do something similar to what he (Sampath) has done,” she added.

Mr. Sampath was supported by T.V. Mohandas Pai, chairman of Manipal Global Education, in this endeavour.

शास्त्रीय संगीताला वाहिलेली देशातील पहिली दूरचित्रवाहिनी महिनाअखेर

शास्त्रीय संगीताचा खरा कान अर्थातच दक्षिणेत कर्नाटकात असण्याचा सर्वसामान्य समज. मात्र शास्त्रीय संगीतरसिकांची खऱ्या अर्थाने श्रवण-भूक भागविण्यासाठी एक मराठी व्यक्तिमत्त्व पुढे आले आहे. एक व्हायोलिनवादक म्हणूनच गेली तीन दशके या क्षेत्रात वावरणारे व संगीताची आवड म्हणून दिग्गज कलाकारांच्या कार्यक्रमांचेच गेली अनेक वर्षे आयोजन करणारे रतिश तागडे शास्त्रीय संगीताला वाहिलेली देशातील पहिली पूर्णवेळ पहिली दूरचित्रवाहिनी घेऊन येत आहेत.

रतिश हे व्यवसायाने सीए तर शिक्षणाने कायद्याचे पदवीधर. गेली तीन दशके व्हायोलिनवादक राहिलेले रतिश तागडे आता उद्योजकही बनले आहेत. शास्त्रीय संगीतासाठी २४ तास वाहिलेली  'इनसिन्क' नावाची दूरचित्रवाहिनी दूरचित्रवाहिनी रतिश यांच्या 'परफेक्ट ऑक्टेव्ह मिडिया प्रोजेक्ट्स लिमिटेड' या कंपनीद्वारे सुरू होत आहे. 'म्युझिक..टु एक्सपेरिअन्स' या टॅगलाइनखाली या वाहिनीचे चाचणी प्रक्षेपण सध्या निवडक केबल वाहिन्यांवर सुरू आहे. जुलैअखेर ते प्रत्यक्षात रसिक संगीत श्रोत्यांनाही पाहायला, ऐकायला मिळेल. केबलवर पहिले सहा महिने ते मोफत असेल. वर्षभरातच ते डीटीएचवरूनही दिसू लागेल.

भांडवली बाजारात नोंदणीकृत एक कंपनी ताब्यात घेऊन रतिश यांनी आपला संगीत छंद व्यवसायाच्या रूपात परावर्तित केला आहे. स्वत: कंपनीचे संस्थापक व व्यवस्थापकीय संचालक राहिलेले तागडे यांच्या या कंपनीवर शास्त्रीय संगीतविषयक कार्यक्रम निवडण्यासाठी गायक शंकर महादेवन, हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया (बासरी), रशिद खान, निलाद्री कुमार (सितार), विजय घाटे (तबला), राजन साजन मिश्रा यांची सल्लागार समिती आहे. शिवाय झाकीर हुसैन, हरिहरन, साधना सरगमसारख्या कलाकारांची साथ आहेच.

देशभरात केवळ संगीत विषयाला वाहिलेल्या ९ वाहिन्या आहेत; मात्र शास्त्रीय संगीत प्रसारण करणारी एकही नाही. 'इनसिन्क' या नव्या वाहिनीकडे सध्याच २०० तासांच्या कार्यक्रमाचे संचित आहे. तोही एचडी तंत्रज्ञानाच्या जोडीने! नव्या वाहिनीवर रिअ‍ॅलिटी शो, स्पर्धा, फ्युझन कॅफे, रागा क्लासिक, शास्त्रीय संगीत शिक्षण, संगीतविषयक कार्यक्रमांचे थेट प्रक्षेपण व स्टुडिओतील रेकॉर्डिग, शास्त्रीय संगीत-रागांवर आधारित चित्रपटांतील गाणीही दाखविण्यात येतील.

याबाबत रतिश यांनी 'लोकसत्ता'ला सांगितले की, आम्ही काही कालावधीपूर्वी केलेल्या एका सर्वेक्षणातून, शास्त्रीय संगीतासाठी ७४ टक्के सहभागींनी स्वतंत्र वाहिनी असण्याची गरज नोंदविली. कंपनीने फेसबुकच्या माध्यमातून घेतलेल्या याबाबतच्या अंदाजातही 'हिट' करणाऱ्यांचे सर्वाधिक प्रमाण हे १८ ते २४ वयोगटांतील तरुणांचेच होते. येथेही ५१ टक्के लोकांनी संगीताला वाहिलेले वाहिनी ऐकण्याच्या तर शास्त्रीय संगीतासाठीच्या २४ तास वाहिनीचे ६७ टक्क्यांनी स्वागत केले.

तागडे म्हणाले की, हिंदुस्थानी शास्त्रीय संगीत वाहिनी पहिल्या टप्प्यात सुरू होत असून कर्नाटकी संगीतासाठी विशेष नवी वाहिनी लवकरच सुरू केली जाईल. मोठय़ा प्रमाणात भारतीय असणाऱ्या अमेरिका तसेच आखाती देशांमध्येही वाहिनीचे प्रक्षेपण दाखविण्यात येणार आहे. सुरुवातीला ४ तासांचे कार्यक्रम नंतरच्या टप्प्यात १० तासांवर नेण्यात येणार आहेत. वर्षअखेपर्यंत १,००० तासांचे कार्यक्रम सादर केले जातील. दक्षिण भारतासाठी स्वतंत्र वाहिनी तसेच एफएम रेडिओही सुरू करण्याचा विचार आहे. सप्टेंबर २०१३ पर्यंत वाहिनी २ कोटी घरांपर्यंत पोहोचेल, असा विश्वासही त्यांनी व्यक्त केला.

सुमारे ६० कोटी भाग भांडवल असणाऱ्या कंपनीने मार्च २०१३ अखेर रु. ८.५० कोटींची उलाढाल केली आहे.
