If you are an aspirant of management then you would probably you would have heard of the abbreviations MBA and PGDM. The question to pick one of them would also have risen in your mind. I will be telling you about the difference between the two.
MBA a university degree program and usually the colleges offing MBA courses are affiliated to technical university of the respective state. Whereas, the colleges for PGDMare recognized by AICTE.
The courses of MBA is not easy to change as it is run by university, on the other hand PGDM course being industry specific is designed keeping future projections in mind and industries needs.
In case of further studies AIU (Association of Indian universities) and AICTE for PGDM programs provides equivalence certificate. To check the Quality Standard of the institutes offering PGDM, you can look for the accreditations from NAAC and NBA.
The exams you need to qualify for PGDM programs are CAT/MAT/GMAT and fro MBA state level university examinations.
Choosing between MBA over PGDM just because MBA is degree a program and PGDM is diploma program is not an intelligent decision. Both are equivalent and if the proper affiliations and accreditations.
PGDM focuses on the industries needs and it is more relevant for students. As per the industry requirements, the syllabus is changed. Whereas changing syllabus of MBA on short term notice is not possible. The changes are not restricted to syllabus only in case of PGDM, the flexibility of PGDM lets pedagogical and teaching- learning process to adapt easily. PGDM give more opportunities to students to work in public/private units. With more exposure through real case studies and live training in the industry, students learn more and gain experience. This is the reason why institutions alike IIMs, XLRI, IMT and others provide PGDM program.
