‘महाराष्ट्र कल्चरल सेंटर’तर्फे दर महिन्याच्या तिसऱ्या रविवारी सुदर्शन रंगमंच येथे संगीतविषयक मासिक उपक्रम चालवला जातो. या “सुदर्शन संगीत सभा” मालिकेतील तिसऱ्या भागात “सूर आरस्पानी” हा कार्यक्रम सादर होणार आहे.
“सूर आरस्पानी” या कार्यक्रमात रसिकांना १९०५ ते १९५५ या काळातील कलावंताच्या ध्वनिमुद्रित संगीताचे काही दुर्मिळ नमुने ऐकायला मिळतील. यात अब्दुल करीम खां, रहिमत खां, वझेबुवा, मास्तर कृष्णराव, बालगंधर्व, सुंदराबाई, मा. दीनानाथ, हिराबाई बडोदेकर, विनायकराव पटवर्धन, इ. लोकप्रिय कलाकारांसह बी. आर्. देवधर यांचा वाद्यवृंद, खाप्रूमाम पर्वतकरांचे तबलावादन, अल्लाउद्दीन खां यांचे व्हायोलिनवादन, इ. अन्यही दुर्मिळ स्वराविष्कार ऐकवले जातील. तसेच तत्कालीन महाराष्ट्रातील कीर्तन, लावणी, नाट्यगीत, काव्यगायन, भावगीत यांचेही वेचक नमुने सादर होतील.
पुण्यातील ध्वनिसंग्राहक संजय संत हे या कार्यक्रमाची प्रस्तुती करणार आहेत. तर संगीतकार चैतन्य कुंटे हे या कार्यक्रमातून गेल्या शतकातील भारतीय संगीत कसे होते, त्याचे ध्वनिमुद्रण कसे सुरु झाले, तत्कालीन कलाकार व त्यांची कला याबद्दल भाष्य करतील.

“Soor Araspaani”: Music in 1905 to 1955
Maharashatra Cultural Centre presents a series “Sudarshan Sangeet Sabha” on every month’s third Sunday. In this series, this month connoisseurs can enjoy the early Gramophone recordings in India – during first 5 decades of 20th century in a special feature program “Soor Araspaani”.
Along with the popular performers such as Abdul Karim Khan, Rahimat Khan, Vazebuwa, Master Krishna, Bal Gandharva, Sundara Bai, Hirabai Barodekar, Vinayakrao Patwardhan, etc; some rare records such as Orchestra of B R Deodhar, Violin of Allauddin Khan, Tabla by Khaprumam Parvatkar, etc will be played. The music & musicians of Maharashtra in that era will also be portrayed with the forms like Keertan, Lawani, NatyaGeet, BhaawGeet, KaywaGayan, etc.
Pune based record collector Sanjay Sant will present the recordings and musicologist Chaitanya Kunte will speak about the artists and music in that era.

संगीतकार श्रीनिवास खळे यांचे निधन

आपल्या कर्णमधुर आणि भावपूर्ण गीतांनी मराठी रसिकांना सहा दशकांहून अधिक काळ मोहिनी घालणारे संगीतकार श्रीनिवास खळे यांचे आज (शुक्रवार) वृद्धापकाळाने निधन झाले. ते ८५ वर्षांचे होते.

भावगीत, अभंग, बालगीते, पोवाडा यांच्यासह संगीताच्या अनेक क्षेत्रांमध्ये स्वत:चा खळे यांनी ठसा उमटविला होता. खळे यांच्या संगीत क्षेत्रातील योगदानाबद्दल त्यांना भारत सरकारचा मानाचा ‘ पद्मभूषण ’पुरस्कारासह ‘ संगीतरत्न ’ पुरस्कार, ‘लता मंगेशकर ’ पुरस्कार आणि जीवनगौरव पुरस्काराने सन्मानित करण्यात आले होते.

Ranjani Ramachandran is a versatile and talented vocalist & a disciple of Pt. Kashinath Bodas, Dr Veena Sahasrabudhhe & Pt Ulhas Kashalkar. She has performed at prestigious venues in India and abroad and has two commercial audio CDs to her credit.

Chaitanya Kunte, a young composer musicologist and Harmonium player, belongs to a rare category of the Hindustani Art musicians who are keeping the tradition flowing with a creative approach.
“Praata Samaye” is a special concert of morning ragas and an endeavour by Ranjani to interpret Bandish-s composed by Chaitanya Kunte. The connoisseurs will be treated to a variety of musical forms such as Khayal, Sadra, Khayalnuma Tarana composed in Ragas like Bhairav, Deshkar, Gaudsarang and Lalit Pancham & Jaunpuri.

उस्ताद अजीजुद्दिन खाँ यांचे निधन

हिंदुस्तानी ख्याल गायकीच्या जयपूर-अतरौली घराण्याचे खलिफा उस्ताद अल्लादिया खाँ यांचे नातू उस्ताद अजीजुद्दिन खाँ (उर्फ बाबा) यांचे मंगळवारी कोल्हापूर येथे निधन झाले. ते उस्ताद भुजीर् खान (अल्लादिया खाँ यांचे धाकटे चिरंजीव) यांचे सुपुत्र होते.

७ फेब्रुवारी १९२१ रोजी जन्मलेल्या बाबांनी पिता व आजोबांकडून अनेक दुर्लभ रागातील बंदिशांची तालीम घेतली होती. आयुष्याच्या अखेरच्या दिवसात अल्लादिया खाँ यांनी आपले जीवन चरित्र लिहून घेतले होते. त्याचा मराठी अनुवाद पं. गोविंदराव टेंबे यांनी केला व इंग्रजीत ते 'माय लाइफ' या शीर्षकाने उपलब्ध आहे. उस्ताद अजीजुद्दिन खान यांना उच्च रक्तदाबामुळे मैफिली गायक होता आले नाही. पण आपल्या जवळील विद्या त्यांनी अखेरपर्यंत मुक्तहस्ते दिली. बाबा खाँसाहेबांनी स्वत: नवे राग व बंदिशींची रचना केली. त्यांच्याकडून किशोरी आमोणकर, धोंडुताई कुलकणीर्, पं. मल्लिकार्जुन मन्सूर, श्रुती सडोलीकर-काटकर, पं. जितेंद अभिषेकी, अश्विनी भिडे-देशपांडे आदींनी विद्या ग्रहण केली होती. साधी जीवनशैली, निस्पृहता, शीघ्र कवित्व, स्वाभिमान अशा गुणांनी युक्त असे बाबा खाँसाहेबांचे जीवन होते.

वाद्यकार युसुफभाई मिरजकरांचे अपघाती निधन

' संगीतातील वाद्ये ज्यांच्याशी चक्कबोलतात ' अशे ज्यांचे वर्णन केलेल जाते ते ज्येष्ठ वाद्यनिर्माते युसुफभाई मिरजकर यांचे येथे अपघाती निधन झाले. ते ६४ वर्षाचे होते. आज पहाटे चालण्याच्या व्यायामासाठी बाहेर पडले असता वारजे पुलाजवळ एका कंटेनरने दिलेल्या धडकेमुळे त्यांना आपला जीव गमवावा लागला.

पं. भीमसेन जोशी, किशोरीताई आमोणकर, उस्तान सुलतान खाँ, उस्ताद रईस खाँ यांच्यासारख्या अनेक दिग्गजांसाठी त्यांनी वाद्ये घडवली आणि त्यांची जपणूकही केली. संगीतक्षेत्रामध्ये त्यांना फार मोठा मान होता. पुण्यातल्या मानाच्या सवाई गंधर्व महोत्सवात त्यांचा जीवनगौरव पुरस्कार देऊन गौरवही करण्यात आला होता.

सतार-तंबोरा आदी तंतूवाद्ये बनवण्यात युसुफभाईंची खास ओळख होती. सतारीचेनादसूर जुळवताना जव्हारीचे सर्वात अवघड काम युसुफभाईंनी वडील इस्माईलशमशुद्दीन यांच्याकडून शिकून घेतले होते. त्यांची वाद्ये आजही जगभरात सुरेलच गातात , अशा शब्दात सतारवादक उस्मानखाँ यांनी त्यांचा गोरव केला होता.

सात पिढ्यांपासून वाद्यनिर्मितीशी जोडल्या गेलेल्या युसुफभाईंचे आजोबा शमसुद्दिन मिरजकर प्रभात सिनेमात कामासाठी म्हणून पुण्यात आले. त्यानंतर पुण्यातच आपल्या वाद्यनिर्मितीच्या ध्येयाला व्यावसायिक आकार दिला, अशी माहिती त्यांचे निकटवर्तीय निवेदक मंगेश वाघमारे यांनी दिली.

" अभिवृंद " द इंडियन क्लासिकल सिम्फनी.
शास्त्रीय संगीतातील प्रकारांच्या एकत्रित ( सामुहिक ) सादरीकरणाचा एक नवा दृक-श्राव्य अनुभव देणारा "अभिवृंद-द इंडियन क्लासिकल सिम्फनी” हा कार्यक्रम येत्या ६ ऑगस्ट , शनिवार रोजी यशवंतराव चव्हाण नाट्यगृह, कोथरूड इथे सादर होत आहे.

बडा ख्याला पासून भैरवी पर्यंत अनेक संगीतप्रकार ( गायन, वादन, नृत्य ) समूहाने सादर होत असताना सुमारे १०० पाशिमात्य वाद्ये म्युझिकल च्या रुपात या प्रकारांची संगत करणार आहेत आणि हे या कार्यक्रमाचे वैशिष्ठ्य आहे.
"अभिवृंद-द इंडियन क्लासिकल सिम्फनी” या कार्यक्रमाची संकल्पना, निर्मिती व संगीत संयोजन हे तबला वादक निखील फाटक व संवादिनी वादक चिन्मय कोल्हटकर या जोडगोळीची आहे. या कार्यक्रमाचे निवेदनही निखील-चिन्मयच करणार आहेत.

दृक-श्राव्य संगीताचा अनोखा अनुभव देणाऱ्या या कार्यक्रमात राहुल देशपांडे, प्राची दुबळे, शर्वरी जमेनीस, सारंग कुलकर्णी, ओंकार दळवी, आमोद कुलकर्णी, अनय गाडगीळ, संदीप कुलकर्णी, निखील फाटक व चिन्मय कोल्हटकर हे एकूण दहा कलाकार सहभागी होत आहेत. सादरीकरणाचं एक नवीन रूप घेऊन अभिजात भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत यामध्ये मांडलं जाणार आहे. काळानुरूप परंपरेला नवतेची जोड मिळत असते हि नवता वेगवेगळ्या रूपांतून परंपरेत सहभागी होत असते. "अभिवृंद-द इंडियन क्लासिकल सिम्फनी” हे त्याचंच एक उदहरण आहे.

हल्लीच्या “आयटमसाँग “ च्या जमान्यात आपल्या कानावर पडणारा आवाज अनेक वाद्यांच्या एकत्रित आविष्काराच्या रुपात असतो. हि “आयटमसाँग “ थोड्या कालावधीसाठी लोकप्रिय होतात, परंतु परंपरेने आपलाल्या दिलेलं संगीत ( शास्त्रीय ) हे वर्षानुवर्षं टिकणारं आहे. नवीन पिढीला या संगीताची गोडी लावण्यात "अभिवृंद-द इंडियन क्लासिकल सिम्फनी” सारखा कार्यक्रम नक्कीच एक चांगला हातभार लावेल.
सरोद, तबला, पखवाज, बासरी, या भारीतंय वाद्यांच्या जोडीला चेलो, ओबो, हॉर्न्स, गिटार, फोन्स यांसारखी पाशिमात्य वाद्ये भारतीय ट्युनिंग प्रमाणे ट्यून करून वाजणार आहेत. यामुळे विविध वाद्यांचा मेळ घालून तयार केलेलं शास्त्रीय संगीताचं हे रूप नक्कीच एक वेगळा आनंद देईल.

शास्त्रीय संगीताची अजिबात ओळख नसणारा कोणीही श्रोता या स्वरूपाच्या कार्यक्रमामुळे त्याकडे ओढला जाईल. एकत्रित सदरीकरणामुळे तसेच वाद्यमेळामुळे बडा ख्यालच्या बंदिशीचीसुद्धा एक ' धून ' ऐकणाऱ्याच्या मनात निर्माण होईल. या दृष्टीने या कार्यक्रमाचं वेगळेपण हे महत्वाचं आहे.

Dr. Ashok Da Rande: A Musical Journey

Sad demise of senior scholar-musician Dr Ashok Da Ranade on Saturday, 30 July 2011 was a shock to entire music world. Maharashtra Cultural Centre will pay tributes to Dr Ashok Da Ranade in a special program “Dr. Ashok Da Rande: A Musical Journey”. In this, Shyamala Vanarase, Vinay Hardikar and Sameer Dublay will share their experiences and thoughts on Dr Ranade. Chaitanya Kunte will explain Dr Ranade’s contribution as a vocalist, composer & musicologist with display of few audio-visuals. Along with this, Dr Ranade’s photographs will be exhibited. This program is organized on Thursday, 4^th August 2011, 6.30pm at Sudarshan Rangamanch.

India lost its leading ethnomusicology expert and composer Dr Ashok Ranade who passed way after prolonged illness in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon.

The 74-year-old’s body was brought to his Bandra (E) residence for the last rites which will be performed at the Shivaji Park crematorium off Cadell Road, Dadar on Sunday at 11am. Born in 1937, the musicologist always pleaded for a congenial juxtaposition of traditional Indian music with a non-conditional openness towards fusion with both folk and the western genres. Deeply interested in the varied street-music of India, which he called 'authentic urban folk-music,' he went to great lengths to chronicle and research the same. This first Director of the University Music Centre, Mumbai, held important positions in the archives and research centre in ethnomusicology of the American Institute of Indian Studies and also in theatre research and ethnomusicology at the National Council for Performing Arts. Having learnt music under Pt Gajananrao Anant Joshi, Pt Laxmanrao Bodas and Prof BR Deodhar, this well respected sangeetacharya from the Akhil BHaratiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, he was the recipient of several awards like Phulambrikar Puraskar and was appointed to the Tagore chair in the MS University, Baroda. He also received the best music director award for professional theatre in the year 1990. His published works include Sangeetache Soundarya Shastra (The Aesthetics of Music) , Loksangeet Shastra (The Discipline of Folk Music), 'Studies in Indian Ethnomusicology' and On Music and Musicians in Hindustan. Apart from editing, composing and compering several music albums, he also held various positions in Indian colleges. His open and precise analysis of the Indian tradition was a great stimulus for many inquisitive young Indian artists. Well-known classical vocalist Shubha Mudgal said she was at a loss for words since she heard of Dr Ranade’s passing away. “It is a great sense of loss and grief. Though I was not a formal student of Dr Ranade, he would never hold back when it came to sharing from his immense wealth of knowledge. And it is this generosity that will always come to mind when I think of him. And this wasn’t with me alone, it was typical of him to be as generous to anyone who approached him.” Her husband and tabla exponent Aneesh Pradhan, too pointed out, “Dr Ranade’s expertise was not just merely limited to classical music. He was perhaps the only scholar-musician to delve into the subtleties of tradition and the rapid changes in contemporary music with equal authority. His passing away is an irreparable loss to the world of music. Director of Pancham Nishad – an organisation devoted to furthering Indian music Shashi Vyas called Dr Ranade “an encyclopaedia on any musical genre across disciplines. “Rarely do we find one man to be master interpreter, observer, researcher and analyst. Rarer still to find all this in the field of music,” he said Santoorist Satish Vyas who is in Ahmedabad for a concert said he was shocked at the news. “No matter what the music seminar or conference, no matter who organised it, no such event could be successful without Dr Ranade’s attendance. This is a truly great loss for the entire music world. We have lost a leading expert on folk, light, semi-classical genres.”

Barkha Ritu

Banyan Tree's 'Barkha Ritu' is an effusive platform, where musical interpretations of rains are presented. In its sixth installment this year, the event will visit six cities, and will be in Pune on July 30. Santoor player Rahul Sharma and group, and sitar exponent Ustad Shujaat Khan will visit the city as part of the event.

Ustad Shujaat Khan hails from a lofty family tradition of distinguished musicians - he is the great-grandson of Ustad Imdad Khan; grandson of Ustad Inayat Khan; and son and disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan. His sitar-playing prowess and gayaki ang performance style have drawn invites from the world over, including London's Royal Albert Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall. It's no surprise that he finds family associations and collaborations an accentuating factor in an already dynamic classical music pool. "Indian classical music is essentially a dynamic form of music, open to interpretations. So coming together of artists only further adds to the creative synergy," he says.

But he balances his fondness for the season with deadpan pragmatism. "Right now if I think of monsoons, I can think only of slush and cities cramped with traffic! But I have very fond memories of the monsoons while growing up in the mountains. It was much more open, green and there was this whole romanticism about waiting for the monsoons! It was absolutely beautiful!" The concept of beauty is at the center of Ustad Khan's creative universe. "Of course, changing seasons is just one of the things that inspires music. There are colours, nature, beauty; beauty in a person also inspires me!"

Indian Classical music has shifted gears in the last few years to embrace a younger audience. There is better acceptance and better appreciation of music fests like Sawai Gandharva. "Yes there is a shift in interest. It could be because, after a point, they (youngsters) realise that there is life beyond mundane activities," Ustad Khan analyses. "At that point, they tend to experiment and perhaps start enjoying and understanding classical music. Also, artists are more accessible today."

Perhaps no classical artiste can escape a question on fusion music, and Ustaad Khan pitches a diplomatic assesment of the topic. "Fusion music may have played a role in attracting the youth towards the sounds of some instruments. But the full range of the instrument can only be experienced when the instrument is played in its purest form; its base, that's classical music. There is no comparison really, it's not that one thing is good for the other."
